Skin moisturizing creams are typically made by combining oil with water. In order to combine oil with water, an emulsifier is required. Because cream can be an ideal cultural medium for bacteria growth, it becomes necessary to add preservatives. Preservatives may have a brownish tint and odor, therefore fragrances and coloring agents are added. Stabilizers and other chemicals may also be added to enhance the quality of the product and the end result is usually a concoction of chemicals that have no beneficial effect. On the contrary, many of these additives can be harmful to the skin and cause premature aging.

One of the most important biological functions of hyaluronic acid is to retain water, a role based on its capacity to hold more water than any other natural substance. Hyaluronic acid plays an important role in tissue hydration, lubrication and cellular function. Hyaluronic acid is used in some of the top selling commercial products such as Estee Lauder’s Night Repair Lotion and Lancome’s Activating Serum. However due to it’s high cost it is used in very small concentrations in these products. Hyaluronic acid has been shown to reduce dryness, itching and buring of the skin. Squalane is a remarkable extract found in olive oil. It is also synthesized in the human liver, a deficiency of which results in dry skin and premature aging. Squalane is an unsaturated oil having a molecular structure similar to Vitamin A.

Squalane was initially discovered in Japan where it was used successfully to treat tuberculosis. It has been shown to have beneficial effects in the management of dermatitis and skin cancer. Japanese scientists also believe that squalane has a tumor blocking potential. It has been found to be a remarkable immunopotentiating agent which stimulates cell mediated cytotoxicity and suppression of tumor growth (Natural Tumour Centre Japan).
